MEET OUR NEW CLUB CAPTAIN

MEET OUR NEW CLUB CAPTAIN

For those who don’t know me my name is Joel Morgan and I am the new Club Captain/Director of Surf Lifesaving.

My background in surf lifesaving started when I was a 7yr old nipper at Evans Head-Casino SLSC, where I grew up.  I attained my bronze medallion when I was 16yrs old, IRB Driver at 17 and awarded my Gold Medallion in 1999. I joined Coffs Harbour SLSC in 2009, and was JAC Superintendent in the 2017-18 season.  I have been a Patrol Captain on and off since 1999 at all my membership clubs.

I joined Southport SLSC on the Gold Coast in 2002 and competed in Ironman, Board and Ski events at Branch, State and Australian titles.  I have trained under and with World, Olympic, Australian and Uncle Toby’s champions such as; Grant Davies, Mark Bennetts, Elizabeth Pluimers, Luke Richmond, Jamie Mitchell, to name but a few.

I was employed as a seasonal lifeguard by SLSNSW for 3 years, and as a Professional Ocean Lifeguard by Gold Coast City Council working on their busy beaches all year round from 2002-2006.  Arguably the best job I’ve ever had.

I have undertaken many rescues in the surf, rescued overturned fishing boats, conducted multiple day long IRB search and rescue for capsized yachts and missing persons.

A failed after-hours surf rescue at Woolgoolga back in 2012, unfortunately resulting in a drowning, re-invigorated my passion to re-apply my extensive surf lifesaving skills back into our great movement and club.

Outside of surf lifesaving, I am father of 3 and a Chartered Professional Civil/Structural Engineer where I run my own engineering consultancy.

Members, I have many new ideas moving forward, but my main goal is to turn our great club into the strongest surf club in regional NSW and therefore regional Australia!

See you down at the Club

Joel Morgan
